Requirements for Membership

• Minimum 2.75 GPA overall and 3.0 GPA in Biology,
• Minimum second semester sophomore status,
• Involved in a research project outside of a specific course,
• Have made a presentation of their research results at a public meeting or forum either on or off campus, in poster or oral format.  If the presentation is to be made off campus, the student must also display the poster or present the oral to the Biology faculty at an appropriate on-campus forum.
• Students who do not meet all of the above criteria but who are still involved in a research project outside of a specific course are eligible for "associate" membership.  Students may be either full or part time and "graduate" members may be inducted as well.

Recent Grants and Awards to Members

• Muthuramanan "Ram" Rameswaran and Hareth Madhoun  received a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research in Janurary 2004 for Is Atrazine an innate immune system disruptor in adult Northern Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens)?

• Matthew J. Colombo received honorable mention for the oral presentation of :The Effects of Environmental Acidification on the Inflammatory Response of Rana pipiens by Matthew J. Colombo and Jaime L. Andrews at the  BBB Regional Conference at the University of Delaware Newark, Delaware.  March 23 2003. 
  

•  Jon Schiavi is the recipient of  the Sebastian and Sharon Faro Research Award for 2003-2004
  

• Nisreen Madhoun is a William R. Bailey Scholar for 2003-2004
  

• Mary Fontanella won a Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship for 2003.  This is the first time Widener's nominee has won one of these fellowships, that are now worth $8000.  Ms. Fontanella, who graduated in May 2003 will use the funding to attend Temple Medical School.
  

• Matt Colombo received honorable mention for his oral presentation at the Spring 2003  BBB conference

• Jon Schiavi has been awarded a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research in the amount of $975 for a project on  Myosin Light Chain 2 Expression in Aerobic Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss  January 2003

• Nick Caputo was the first recipient of the Robert Stephen Weimann Endowed Student Research Fund.  This award is named in honor of  Widener student Rob Weimann, a very serious student in addition to being an excellent research student,  who worked with Dr. Martin Simon and Dr. Brodkin on their frog project from 1991 to 1992.   The award provides a stipend to a biology student for summer research ( Summer 2002)

• Jaime Andrews and Emily Piddington were Sebastian and Sharon Faro Scholars in 2002-2003

•  Nick Caputo was  awarded a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research for " Longitudinal variation of  troponin-T isoforms in rainbow trout (Oncorrhynchus mykiss)" and its correlation to muscle activation.  December 2001

• Jill Hopkins was awarded a Beta Beta Beta research foundation grant  for: "The Correlation Between Ploidy and Guard Cell Area in Sisyrinchium atlanticum Bickn."  (Dr. Hornberger, research advisor)  November 2001

• Shamus Keeler and Nzingha White  recieved the William R. Bailey Scholarship in  2001-2002

• Tyesha Fuller recieved the William R. Bailey Scholarship in 2000-2001

• Karen Stauffer was awarded a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research: "Developmental
patterns of myosin heavy chain expression in rainbow trout (Oncorrhynchus mykiss)",  June 1998
Ms. Stauffer was also a Faro Scholar.

• Kruti Patel was the recipient of a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research  "Using DNA Fingerprinting to Determine Monogamy in Pigeons", May 1998.  Ms. Patel was also a Bailey Scholar

• Margaret Sadoff was the recipient of a Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research, "The Effect of Acid Environment on the Phagocytic Activity of Peritoneal White Blood Cells in Rana pipiens," December 1997.

• Erik Ney was the recipient of a Beta Beta Beta research foundation scholarship for his project, "The Effects of Salmonella typhimyrium, Vaccine Strain SL 3235, Inoculation on the Murine Cytokine Response," October 1997.

• Katherine D. Dugan, Jennifer Tevanian (Dr. Frances E. Weaver, mentor)  received the second place John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student Research for their poster, "In vitro study of proteins that interact during mammalian development," presented at the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society District Convention, Northeast Region II in Salisbury MD, April 19, 1997.

• Carol Conte received a Sigma Xi Research Grant for a project entitled  "Behavioral pH Preference of Frogs (Rana pipiens and clamitans) Under Laboratory Conditions," in July 1996.

• Eric Ney received a Sigma Xi Research grant for a project entitled "The Effect of Salmonella typhimurium, Vaccine Strain SL3235, on the Murine Cytokine Response," in July 1996.

• Ruth Myers was the recipient of a Beta Beta Beta research foundation scholarship for her project, "Metabolic Responses of Rana pipiens to an Acidic Environment," in December 1996.

• Katherine Dugan was the recipient of a Beta Beta Beta research foundation scholarship for her project, "In Vitro Study of Proteins that Interact During Mammalian Development," in December 1996.
