Notes for AOL Users |
For easy reference, Print out these instructions The Web browser that is included with the America Online software was developed by Microsoft and America Online. Unfortunately, it is not supported by our automation system because it does not include the automatic proxy configuration function which is required in order to access the Reference Databases. The same applies to the version of Netscape offered to AOL users. If you wish to access the library's databases, you can download Netscape Navigator from the Netscape Web site. You will not be able to access your mail, but you will be able to access the library's databases and request holds on items using WebCat. To access your mail or other parts of AOL you should use your AOL browser. The following link will take you to Netscape where you can download Navigator 4.0 (Stand Alone). "Stand Alone" means that you will dowload Netscape's Web browser only. E-mail software, newsreader, chat software, etc. will not be included.
Download Netscape Navigator 4 (Stand Alone) After clicking on the link above, do the following: 1. Select your operating system (Win95/NT, Win 3.1 or Mac)2. Select a language (English) 3. Select a product version (Product Version 4.08) 4. Do not check the box for "Download strong U.S./Canada-only encryption" 5. Ignore the note to AOL users about the size of the file. Netscape 4.08 Stand Alone is less than 12.4 MB so you should have no trouble downloading it. 6. At the bottom of the page, click on U.S. and Canadian customers Download for free. Take note of the folder the program will be placed in. You can change it if you like. 7. While downloading Netscape a "Thank You" page will appear. Print out the instructions for installing Netscape if you need them. After you have installed Netscape, return to the setup page and select the instructions for setting up Netscape version 4 for your operating system. The URL for the setup page is http://libcat.widener.edu/screens/wamproxy.html Set Netscape's Home Page to the Library: If you plan to use Netscape mainly to access the library, why not set the opening page (Home Page) to the library? 1. Click in the location box at the top of the screen and type in the library's URL: www2.widener.edu/Wolfgram-Memorial-Library/index.html 2. Click on Edit on the menu bar 3. Click on Preferences 4. Click on Navigator on the left side of the window 5. Click on the Use Current Page button in the Home Page area on the right side of the window Each time you start Netscape you will be taken directly to the library. If you get lost searching the Web, or if you want a quick way to start over, just click on the Home button at the top of the screen to return to the library's home page. Updated 20 October 1999 |
