Welcome to GSI
GSI is a heavy ion research center funded by the Federal Government of
Germany and the state of Hesse. It is located in a northern suburb of Darmstadt,
25 km south of Frankfurt. GSI operates a heavy ion accelerator facility
consisting of the linear accelerator UNILAC (energy of 2 - 20 MeV per nucleon),
the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS 18 (1 - 2 GeV/u), the storage cooler ring
ESR (0.5 - 1 GeV/u) and about 30 experimental set-ups.
Some 700 people are employed, including about 300 scientists and engineers.
The facility is a user-facility open to national and international research
groups. More than 1000 scientists from over 25 countries are involved in
the ongoing research activities pursued at GSI. The program includes fundamental
research in nuclear, atomic and biophysics as well research in applied
fields as material sciences, plasma physics, cancer therapy, and accelerator
development.
GSI is a member of the association of national research centers Hermann
von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren (HGF).
