Biology 230 Biology of Cells and Genes

Spring 2008

Course Goals and Objectives

 A. To develop literacy in cell biology and genetics at an introductory level

§         Students will be able to articulate the functions of the major classes of macromolecules.

§         Students will be able to discriminate among cellular and sub-cellular structures, such as membranes or organelles; and their functions.

§         Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the core metabolic pathways of eukaryotic cells.

§         Students will be able to discriminate among the steps in the flow of information from DNA to protein

§          Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the cell cycle and of mitosis and meiosis.

§         Students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the connections between cell division and transmission (Mendelian) genetics.

§         Students will be able to recognize and analyze inheritance patterns beyond simple dominance.

§         Students will be able to analyze a pedigree showing human inheritance.

§         Students will be able to describe points in and identify possible mechanisms for the regulation of eukaryotic gene expression.

B. To reinforce scientific process and technical skills. Upon completion of this course:

§         Students will have had additional experience with evidence based reasoning in a laboratory setting

§         Students will have had additional experience with the use of compound microscopes necessary for histology, their next course

§         Students will have had additional experience with the analysis of quantitative information

§         Students will have been introduced to basic aseptic technique for the handling of microorganisms and to appropriate handing and disposal of hazardous chemicals

§         Students will have had experience with electrophoretic separation of protein and nucleic acid molecules.

§         Students will have been introduced to several techniques used in genetic testing or forensic analysis

 C. To reinforce skills in oral and written communication.  Upon completion of this course:

§         Students will be able to document scientific sources appropriately

§         Students will be able to give a group oral presentation on a case study

D. To cultivate the understanding that cellular and molecular processes are connected to physical therapy practice and to social issues. Upon completion of this course:

§                     Students will have been introduced to the connections between cellular and molecular biology, physical therapy practice and social issues through a group

project (case study).

§                     Students will have documented their personal reflections on these connections.

§                     Students will have documented their personal reflections on their learning about cell biology and genetics
