Student Researchers

Three Widener undergraduates have worked on the Streptomyces
a
ntibiotic research project in my lab since 1994:
Cathryn Gould            Thomas Parisi          Victoria Heverly

All three students have reported on their research at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) annual meetings and in seminars presented during "Honors Week" at Widener.

Cathryn Gould

Cathy did the painstaking startup studies on the methods for isolating Streptomyces from soil and characterizing the spectrum of the antibiotics they produce. She co-authored a research paper  (along with Tom Parisi) which was published in the proceedings of the 1996 annual meeting of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Cathy received her BS in Biology in May, 1995 and is currently a graduate student in the Physical Therapy Program at Widener University

Thomas Parisi

Tom is a 1996 Biology graduate of Widener University.  His research characterized the antimicrobial spectrum of several key Streptomyces isolates. He presented his results  (along with Cathy Gould) to the 1996 NCUR Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Tom is currently a graduate student in Molecular Biology at Thomas Jefferson University in Phila., PA.

Victoria Heverly

Vikki's research has involved the purification and biophysical characterization of an unusual high molecular weight antimetabolite produced by a Streptomyces isolate. She reported on her research at the 1997 National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Austin, Texas. Vikki will graduate from Widener with a Bachelors degree in Biology in August 1997. She is continuing her research this summer with  Dr. Robert Morris in the Biology Dept. at Widener University. She plans to pursue a career as a research biochemist.
