Reactions at Binuclear Transition Metal Centers

The role of metalloproteins in binding and activating small molecules in biological systems forms the inspiration for this work.  I am specifically interested in modeling enzymes with active sites which contain two transition metal ions.  Two metals in close proximity bind and activate substrates in ways that cannot be observed with a single metal ion.  In my work, macrocyclic ligands like that shown below are used to form binuclear metal complexes.  Using common organic synthesis techniques, we can prepare a variety of ligands, which are reacted with different transition metals.  The resulting coordination complexes are characterized and used for binding and reactivity studies.
