Campus Ecology and Environmental Stewardship: FRS 101 - A Course for Freshmen Undergraduates.
I describe a course in ecology and environmental stewardship that I have designed and offer to freshmen at Widener University. Due to ongoing degradation of Earth's ecosystems, unprecedented rates of biological extinction, and global climatic perturbation, the next 50 years will be of telling significance to humanity. The present generation of students must redesign key aspects of our basic socio/economic/cultural framework to reduce our impact upon our environment and transform our society into one that is sustainable. There is no better place to begin this process than on our college and university campuses. My course explores the environmental design of institutions of higher learning. Topics include energy and water use, landscaping, purchasing, dining services, solid and liquid wastes, etc. We study "green campus" initiatives at Tufts University, Brown University, and others described in the texts Ecodemia (by Julian Keniry) and Campus Ecology (April Smith). A major portion of the course involves a research inquiry project in which students research a specific topic in campus operations at Widener University and explore solutions that both reduce environmental costs while also reducing campus operations costs. Results of their projects are presented to their peers during an in-class symposium and are posted on the course web site at http://www.science.widener.edu/~grant/courses/campus.html |
