From the Widener University Student Handbook: ALPHA CHI (NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP HONOR SOCIETY) PENNSYLVANIA ALPHA CHAPTER. Founded in 1922 at the University of Texas, the society was organized to recognize academic achievement and to unify honor students as they proceed to their common goals. The Pennsylvania Alpha Chapter of Alpha Chi was created on 16 January 1970, and is open by invitation to Widener University students who are in the top 10% of their class with a cumulative average not less than 3.5 and who have completed at least 60 credits (Junior status) of their academic work at Widener University Faculty Advisor (since September 1998): Bruce W. AN OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY AND PURPOSES OF ALPHA CHI:
Alpha Chi is a coeducational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and
university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. Its name derives from the initial letters of the Greek words
ALETHEIA, meaning TRUTH, and XAPAKTHP, meaning CHARACTER. As a general honor society, Alpha Chi admits to membership students from all academic disciplines. A member institution, which must
be a regionally accredited, baccalaureate degree-granting college or university, may invite to membership no more than the top 10
percent of the junior and senior classes. Membership in Alpha Chi recognizes previous accomplishments and provides opportunity for continued growth and service. As a phrase
from the society's constitution suggests, Alpha Chi seeks to find ways to assist students in "making scholarship effective for good." more on the history of Alpha Chi at:

Alpha Chi offers scholarships to undergraduate seniors (who must apply as juniors) and to graduate
students who were inducted into Alpha Chi as undergraduates. Each year deadlines are in February.
