• Beginners Guide to HTML This is a great place to start. Highly recommended reading for anyone starting to write HTML.

• Composing Good HTML This is a more advanced and detailed discussion about writing HTML documents. This is highly recommended for anyone who has started writing HTML and is ready for some more detail.

• Hypertext Style guide from WWW3 This guide has many useful suggestions about writing "good" HTML.

• HTML Terrorist's Handbook This is a humorous page that provides some insight into common mistakes.

• HTML Guides and Tutorials at Yahoo And if you still want more, this list should keep you busy for a long time.

• Frames Tutorial If you are ready to create frames, this is an excellent introduction. Frames have some significant advantages, but poorly designed frames can create problems for your reader.

  Applications for creating HTML documents.

  • Web-Edit. This is the HTML editor that I use. There are lots of others out there. Some are freeware, some are shareware, some are commercial products with free trial periods (like this one). I selected WebEdit because at the time it was the only editor with a built in WYSIWIG viewer and it had the most complete set of HTML tags. I also like the spell checker, the table and form builder, the layout, and the online help.

  • Netscape Gold I use the Netscape browser because it is the standard on our campus and it usually is the most innovative. If you are starting to develop HTML, I recommend starting with Netscape Gold. This version of the browser includes a very easy to use HTML editor. The details of HTML and the steps required to load pages on the server are all handled transparently (well relatively).

  • Adobe Acrobat. This program generates electronic documents. It is very useful for complex documents that are not well suited to HTML. It distributes documents that are identical to what you would print from your computer (when everything works right).
