Medical Scholars Program

An early assurance, contingency medical school admission program cooperatively offered by Widener University, Crozer-Chester Medical Center, and Temple University School of Medicine

The Widener Medical Scholars Program offers early assurance, contingency admission to Temple University School of Medicine for highly qualified high school seniors who apply to Widener University for pre-medical study. The program has been designed to attract broadly educated candidates who are interested in entering the practice of medicine in the areas of family practice, general internal medicine, or general pediatrics.

Once selected for the program, you participate in a well-integrated undergraduate-affiliated hospital-medical school experience that involves you in a variety of experiences at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, a Clinical Campus of the School of Medicine located a few blocks from Widener University. The medical center affords you the opportunity while you are at Widener to explore the clinical areas of pediatrics, internal medicine, and family medicine in depth. Experiences in areas such as surgery and emergency trauma medicine are also available. During your undergraduate years, you also participate in a number of activities at the School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

To qualify for the program, you must be particularly inclined toward generalist medical practice and be a legal resident of Pennsylvania or Delaware. You may not transfer into the program from another undergraduate institution.

No more than eight Widener Medical Scholars are admitted each year. Acceptance into the Medical Scholars Program assures final admission to the Temple University School of Medicine after the completion of a bachelor's degree at Widener University, provided that certain conditions have been satisfied.

If you are interested, you must satisfy Widener University admissions criteria, select an academic major in which to pursue your pre-medical preparation, and submit a Supplemental Widener Medical Scholars Application.

Following our receipt of your application, you will be interviewed by the Health Professions Advisor of Widener University who, together with the Dean of Admissions, will recommend no more than thirty applicants for interviews with staff physicians at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. The medical center interviews take place in early January.

Upon the recommendations of the Dean of Admissions at Widener University and the Director of Medical Education at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, sixteen candidates are then invited for interviews with the Admissions Committee at Temple University School of Medicine. Early, conditional assurance of medical school admission is offered by the School of Medicine to selected candidates who are designated as Widener Medical Scholars upon their matriculation at Widener University.

Your undergraduate experience at Widener University will be not less than four years or the equivalent. The program has been designed to allow you to major in any of a variety of disciplines, to acquire a strong science background, and to acquire a broad education in areas outside the science . During the senior year at Widener University, you will engage in an intensive eight semester hour research/clinical experience at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

To be eligible to become a Widener Medical Scholar, you must have a minimum combined SAT score of 1270, with no less than 560 in each sub test.

Once enrolled at Widener, you must maintain no less than a 3.3 GPA during your pre-medical studies, and you must take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in the spring of your junior year. In the summer following your junior year, you will apply to Temple University School of Medicine through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).

Following your entry to Temple University School of Medicine, you will take all of your required third year clinical clerkships and all of your required fourth year clinical clerkships at Temple's Crozer-Chester Medical Center Clinical Campus.

As you conclude your studies for the M.D. degree at Temple University School of Medicine, Widener Medical Scholars are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to a residency program in general pediatrics, general internal medicine, or family medicine at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
